What is PR and why organisations fail to get media traction
Public relations is the art of informing and persuading the public about the importance of a particular issue, your issue.
Public opinion matters because it informs our beliefs and behaviour. Persuading the public (or specific decision-makers) about the importance of your idea or work is central, but first you have to get past the media gatekeepers.
Having an idea, or doing good work, is not enough to convince a journalist, editor, or producer to run your story. Your idea has to be presented and ‘packaged’ in a particular way that is newsworthy in order to get picked up and run in mainstream media outlets.
Too many not-for-profits, businesses, and organisations start with the work the work they are engaged in and fail to intersect with the news cycle or what the broad social issues or news pegs are.
